7PM DOORS 8PM SHOW $14 ADVANCE $20 AT THE DOOR ABOUT FOREIGN FIELDS Foreign Fields have spent the last few years actively trying to simplify their lives. In 2022, with the world drastically changing, they realized a desire to do things differently: they sought out joy and excitement. Pulling a live band together with their long-time musical companies Nate Babbs (drums) and Nick Morawiecki (guitar), ideas were shared, songs were sketched in real-time, and they focused on no longer being so precious about their band’s output. The result is What It Cost, the fourth full-length album and a reimagining of all that the band stands for. The album is a collection of ten newly formed songs, buoyed by friendship and the power of collaborative spirit. It’s as loose and free as they’ve ever sounded while retaining the emotive shimmer that has always provided the band’s beating heart. What It Cost follows a body of work that includes three full-length albums spanning the previous decade. Their all-encompassing 2020 LP, The Beauty Of Survival, was a lush blurring of folk, ambient, and electronica, preceded by 2017’s Take Cover and 2012’s Anywhere But Where I Am. Eric and Brian saw it then, as they do now, as the end of a chapter, the final part of a trilogy where they found answers to the questions they’d previously posed. What It Cost opens up a new chapter of Foreign Fields.
DOORS 4PM SHOW 5PM $20 ADVANCE $25 AT THE DOOR Come join Button Poetry at Icehouse on October 27th to celebrate the release of Neil Hilborn’s newest poetry collection About Time! This night of poetry will feature special guests performances by Allison Broeren, Shane Hawley, Kyle Tran Myhre, & Ollie Schminkey! Neil Hilborn returns with the poignant and profound collection About Time. Balancing between devastation and perseverance, About Time shares the struggle to maintain mental health during the recent global crises. With his distinctly conversational tone and dark humor, Hilborn breaks down the cycle of mental illness—small improvements, setbacks, and the process of recovery. This collection fights against itself as the poems try to find a place for hope, love, and goodness in a lonely, terrifying world—ultimately, inspiring belief in and connection to all the small joys that we can find. Fans new and old will be stunned by Hilborn’s third collection. Continuing in the legacy of his previous works, About Time is hot soup for the troubled soul and absolutely cannot be missed. ABOUT YOUR FEATURES: Neil Hilborn (he/him) is a best-selling author and, with over 150 million views to his credit, he is the most-watched poet ever. He has performed in 41 states and 8 countries, and in 2019 alone he drove coast to coast five times while on tour. His favorite touring moments are: crying while meeting a wombat in Australia; spending two weeks in Edinburgh at the Fringe Festival; meeting Dionne Warwick at the Smithsonian; and putting 12,000 miles on a minivan in two months with his fellow road goblin Mark. His favorite sandwiches come from: Primanti Bros in Pittsburgh, Black’s BBQ in Austin, one specific Publix in Tampa, and a torta truck he found while stranded in Pasco, Washington. One time on stage he accidentally punched the microphone and broke his wedding ring, and thanks to years of therapy he did not interpret this as a sign. His preferred stage entrance music is “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen, during which he walks very slowly. In addition to touring and writing he runs workshops on craft, performance, and how to apologize for ignoring texts. He and his wife live on a hobby farm outside Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where they adopt too many animals. The musicianship is stellar, with fingerpicking on acoustic guitar & banjo. 7:30PM DOORS 8:30PM SHOW $20 ADVANCE $27 DAY OF SHOW Join us in the Starlight Room! Seating will be first come, first served. Living Thing, the newest full-length album from Oregon-based songwriter Anna Tivel, is an arcing dive into the existential. Written through the tumultuous eyes of 2020 and recorded in Eau Claire, WI in profound collaboration with long-time friend and producer Shane Leonard, these are songs of struggle and aliveness expressed with great joy. “I wrote feverishly in the strange chaos of that year, suddenly out of work and attempting to understand the shifting human fabric, the depth of desperation, and the overwhelming tenacity of spirit. The resulting songs felt rhythmic and vital, with more melody and soaring chorus than I’ve explored in the past. There was no way and no means to gather a full band, and I brought the songs to Shane’s doorstep knowing and fully trusting the skill and exuberance of his creative imagination. Shane stripped everything down to the studs and we rebuilt it together, just the two of us for a month in his garage studio, Shane dreaming up each sonic layer while I chased the lyrics to one last double chorus.”
5PM DOORS 7PM SHOW $18 ADVANCE $23 AT THE DOORS SETTING Setting is Nathan Bowles (solo/trio, Pelt, Black Twig Pickers) on strings, keys, tapes, and percussion; Jaime Fennelly (Mind Over Mirrors, Peeesseye) on harmoniums, synthesizers, and piano zither; and Joe Westerlund (solo, Califone, Sylvan Esso, Jake Xerxes Fussell) on drums, percussion, and metallophones. Setting established its own setting and found its footing in regularly scheduled improvisational sessions outside Westerlund’s home in Durham, North Carolina, beginning in 2021. The three players began as two, in the context of occasional Bowles and Westerlund percussion duo performances dating back to 2018. Fennelly provided the initial impetus to gather and play together with intentionality and discipline, as well as an harmonic adhesive and thickening agent in the grain and gravity of his harmonium and synthesizer. As always, Bowles’s background as a pianist and drummer informs his approach to banjo, imparting a woodiness, a piney verticality and resinous tang. Westerlund’s training with Milford Graves is apparent in his polyrhythmic flow and its correspondences to human circulatory and corporeal rhythms. They recorded their collective discoveries on their debut album “Shone a Rainbow Light On” (Paradise of Bachelors), which Uncut gave a "9/10" and Mojo Magazine listed as #3 of Underground Records of 2023, calling it “a record that spectacularly reconciles micro-detailed improv with deep-listening ambience.”

The Minneapolis-based, classically trained violinist turned versatile fiddler has become a commanding international presence— writing powerful genre-bending songs, heading up her own critically acclaimed indie rock band, and backing up Grammy-winning acts like The Okee Dokee Brothers. Although she got her start playing with folk and country bands, Rae’s most recent album I Can’t Be the One You Want Me to Be (2019) took a decided turn into pop and rock with unflinching, hard-hitting songs. It also showcased her orchestration abilities with layered violin tracks saturated in heavy grooves and moody arrangements. Together they bring a heartfelt stage show with high energy, presence and a sound meant to heal and uplift those in attendance. 7PM DOORS 8PM SHOW $12 ADVANCE $18 DAY OF SHOW $10 STUDENT TICKET W/ ID AT THE DOOR Celebrating the release of their new single, Dial Tone will be coming to Icehouse with Lighter Co., Scorched Waves, and Soulflower. The evening will be a unique blend of rock, punk, indie-pop, and jazz. Come ready to mosh. Presented by Radio K. ABOUT DIAL TONE Dial Tone embodies the DIY ethos of the Minneapolis underground scene. Guitarist (Cole Pivec), drummer (Henning Hanson), and vocalist (Daisy Forester) met as students in their first year at the University of Minnesota and blend together backgrounds in classical music, jazz, and rock to create their distinctive sound. Within a year of existence, the band self-recorded, produced, and released a full-length concept album aurally tracing the evolution of underground music in the Twin Cities, all from their bedroom studio in Marcy Holmes, Minneapolis. Dial Tone has consistently defied categorization, evident in their debut self-titled album (which spans alt-rock, grunge, punk, and indie pop). With their most recent release -- Time For A Living -- they have once more demonstrated their capacity for musical range. Dial Tone's latest project was completed fully DIY while every member was on a different continent, and includes stripped-down reimaginings of four songs off their debut record and a cover of Hippo Campus' "Suicide Saturday", live-recorded at The Fine Line. Moving forward, Dial Tone has every intention of continuing to explore new genres, topics, and ways of engaging in and supporting the independent DIY Twin Cities scene, and zero intention of becoming any more categorizable beyond that. ABOUT SCORCHED WAVES Scorched Waves, is an indie rock sensation hailing from Stevens Point, WI. The band, comprising Tyler Armstrong (Guitar), Al Vuorinen (Bass), Jaren Wojcik (Keyboards & Auxiliary Percussion), Damian Kessler (Drums), and Tiernan Brinkman (Vocals), bring a dynamic energy born from their diverse touring experiences. ABOUT LIGHTER CO Rooted in Minneapolis and formed in early 2019, Lighter Co. (formerly Zippo Man) has since garnered a reputation for their live performances. Often considered “genre-fluid”, the band is known for covering a vast sonic terrain throughout a set - and never without their suits, boots, and white Stetson.
