Inspired by the collaborative workshop model at folk festivals around the country, "Song-Swap" pairs two artists working inside or out of a common genre for a back & forth, one-inspires-the-next live performance and behind-the-curtain conversation around the origins of new songs. No set lists, no rehearsals, no accompaniment - these solo performances in a duo setting strip the songs down to their basic elements, allowing the songwriter to leave the writing room door ajar to process, inspiration, tall tales and outright myths. It's VH1 Storytellers for the regional & independent; come see what makes the lyrical watchmakers' tick… MISTY BOYCE: There’s an uncertainty in the moments after a disaster; a tentative hope that the worst is over and a wary fear that you’ve only just reached the eye of the storm. Los Angeles indie-pop artist Misty Boyce’s new album genesis captures this moment with stark clarity and raw beauty. Throughout its eight tracks, genesis finds Boyce laid emotionally bare while simultaneously chronicling a society on the precipice of a long overdue shift, exploring mortality, new love, and changing gender & social structures. “There’s been an awakening about the female experience in the world,” says Boyce. “I found myself looking back at my religious upbringing and realizing how much that storytelling informed the way that I move through the world as a woman, and how toxic it is. It’s been really freeing to realize that I don’t have to live by those archetypes.” A sought-after keyboardist, Boyce has spent years playing alongside award winning artists including Sara Bareilles, BØRNS, Lord Huron, Sting, Ingrid Michaelson & more, all the while continuing to release records of her own to critical acclaim. Her third LP—2018’s chronicle of trauma, depression, & religion, Get Lost, was met with praise from numerous media outlets including NYLON, Uproxx, Gold Flake Paint, Issue Magazine, The Wild Honey Pie, Substream Magazine, The Autumn Roses & more. NAT HARVIE: Nat Harvie (they/them) is a producer, recordist, and performance artist currently based in Minneapolis, MN. Nat began their recording career at eighteen with the bygone Duluth label, Chaperone Records (Charlie Parr, Retribution Gospel Choir, Lion or Gazelle). After the dissolution of the label only a year later, Nat fell deep into the world of DIY recording and began to produce and release their own work independently, starting with their 2015 debut solo EP, Snow is a Gift to my Fear. Following this release, Nat formed their live outfit, Nat Harvie Trio, and quickly became a leading voice in the Duluth scene, garnering local and regional attention for their heartfelt songwriting, lush arrangements, and powerful live performances. While developing their voice and style as a solo artist Nat also continued to hone their craft as a recordist and producer, learning and working in studios between Duluth, Vancouver, Pittsburgh, and Minneapolis/St. Paul. During this period, Nat produced their first LP, Nat Harvie’s Broken Record, a rococo alternative pop effort independently released in the spring of 2018. After a year of shows supporting Broken Record, Nat Harvie Trio played one final farewell show at Duluth’s Sacred Heart Cathedral with added guitarist Alan Sparhawk of Low. The trio then disbanded and Nat moved to St. Paul to work at Salon, the recording studio of Zoo Animal frontwoman Holly Hansen.
